Podcast
by Abhishek Mathur

Percussionist Peter Conradin Zumthor and inventor Gabriel Schneider modify the sound on the bell of the Reformed Church in Gais. Located in the main square of the town, the artistic intervention to this most familiar of sounds produces a hypnotic collective listening experience.

Artist Bio

In 2020, percussionist Peter Conradin Zumthor (born 1979) was bell ringer in residence at the Lucerne Festival and realized the project Bells - con sordino, in which he altered the sound of the bells of four Lucerne churches. Other locations followed: in 2023, as part of the Wien Modern festival, he prepared the bells of St. Stephen's Cathedral, and at Easter 2024, the bells of the old town churches in Zurich. Now, together with inventor Gabriel Schneider, he is implementing the project in Gais. The artistic intervention on the bells of the Reformed Church changes the familiar soundscape. With subtle acoustic accents, Zumthor ensures that sound art is present in Gais for the duration of the festival.
