Mixtape

In February 2011, the news of revolution spreading across the Arab world inspired two Melbourne music producers to lock themselves up in a studio for two days and compile a mixtape of songs and quotes from Radio National broadcasts. Websites such as Libya’s Enough Gaddafi and Egyptian label 100copies were forced offline at the time, but this couldn’t stop artists uploading their own songs inspired by the revolts.

Jodel, Alphorn und die Erfindung der Schweizer Volksmusik

Der Handel mit anderen europäischen Ländern. Die Aufnahme von Flüchtlingen. Der Transitverkehr. Das sind historisch gesehen, die Traditionen der Schweiz. Das Alphorn, das «Schwyzer Örgeli» oder – ganz generell – die Festivals der Schweizer Volksmusik hingegen nicht. Sie sind moderne Errungenschaften der Schweiz.

In Interlaken findet vom 16. bis am 19. Juni 2011 das Eidgenössische Jodlerfest statt. Für Norient ein Grund, einen kritischen Blick auf die Schweizer Volksmusik zu werfen. Norient hat den Musikethnologen und Volksmusikspezialisten Dieter Ringli getroffen.

10'000 Jodlerinnen und Jodler treffen sich in Interlaken. Im Vordergrund steht die Freude am Gesang. Es geht aber auch darum, im Jodel-Wettbewerb zu bestehen. Norient ist der Geschichte nachgegangen, wie es zu diesem Wettbewerb gekommen ist. Dieser Bericht wurde auch auf Radio Bern RaBe gesendet:

Biography

Michael Spahr (VJ Rhaps) is a historian MA, journalist, and media artist. He was on the board of Norient from 2008 until 2014. He developed the website norient.com. He was the co-founder and co-director (2009–2014) of the Norient Musikfilm Festival. He contributed with his video art to the audio-visual scientific media performances of Norient. He was the host and DJ of Norients monthly radio show Sonic Traces on Radio RaBe. He works as a freelance artist, film maker, and journalist in Bern (Switzerland). Follow him on his Website.

Dr. Thomas Burkhalter is an anthropologist/ethnomusicologist, AV-artist, and writer from Bern (Switzerland). He is the founder and director of Norient and the Norient Festival (NF), co-directed AV-performances and documentary films (e.g. «Contradict», Berner Filmpreis 2020 + Al-Jazeera Witness), and is the author and co-editor of several books (e.g., «Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut», Routledge, «The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East», Wesleyan University Press). He teaches regularly at universities, and runs workshops for arts institutions. Since 2022 he produces the Norient Mixtape for Swiss National Radio SRF3. Currently, he is working on his new music project «Melodies In My Head», and on the podcast series «South Asian Sound Stories» with musicians from the UK, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Da Cruz, das Duo der Bern-Brasilianerin Mariana Da Cruz und des Berner Musikjournalisten und Produzenten Ane Hebeisen, pendeln auf ihrem Album Sistema Subversiva zwischen Club-Musik und Hör-CD.

Bern mausert sich zu einer kleinen Hochburg der Weltmusik 2.0 – oder der Tribal Electronica: Der Berner Produzent Wildlife! arbeitet derzeit am neuen Album der Jamaikanerin Terry Lynn; der Club Bonsoir veranstaltet laufend aufkommende Stars aus Afrika oder Lateinamerika; und Filewile experimentieren mit Rappern und Pop-Künstlern aus Südafrika. Da Cruz, das Duo der Bern-Brasilianerin Mariana Da Cruz und des Berner Musikjournalisten und Produzenten Ane Hebeisen, haben ihre dritte CD Sistema Subversiva jetzt auf dem bekannten US-Label Six Degrees Records herausgegeben. Da Cruz setzt zum Auftakt auf den aggressiven Sprechgesang des angolanischen Kuduro, flirtet bald mit bekannteren brasilianischen Klangfärbungen und formt mit «Papo De» einen poppigen Ohrwurm. Hebeisen setzt auf kantige Beats und auf Klänge aus Jazz, Pop, Rock und Metal. Der Mix zwischen Club-Musik und Hör-CD gelingt in einigen Stücken sehr gut, in anderen stehen Musik und Gesang noch zu sehr nebeneinander. Eine Band mit Potenzial für musikalische Höhenflüge.

Im Interview erzählen Mariana Da Cruz und Ane Hebeisen, wie sie als Duo Da Cruz immer näher zusammenfinden. Eigentlich sei «Sistema Subversiva» aber vor allem ein unvernünftiges Album.

Mariana Da Cruz erzählt von ihren musikalischen Vorbildern aus Brasilien. Und Ane Hebeisen blickt zurück in die 1990er Jahre, auf seine erste Brasilien-Tour mit der Berner Electro-Industrial-Band Swamp Terrorists.

«Sistema Subversiva» liegt irgendwo zwischen der Ästhetik der Weltmusik 2.0 – zum Beispiel Kuduro – und neuen Trends in der brasilianischen Musik.
