Michael Spahr (VJ Rhaps) is a journalist and media artist. He was on the board of norient from 2008 until 2014. He developed the website norient.com. He helped setting up the Norient Musikfilm Festival and was the co-director until 2014. He contributes with his video art to the audio-visual scientific media performances of norient. He is the host and DJ of norient’s monthly radio show Sonic Traces. He studied history in Bern and Amsterdam (MA 1998). Afterwards he started working for Dutch and Swiss video production companies and TV stations. Since 2003 he is a freelance film director and media artist. Since 2010 he works for the community radio station Radio Bern RaBe. At the moment he is the editor-in-chief of the news show RaBe-Info. His media art work is often interdisciplinary, interactive and is performed in real-time. He produces audio-visual live shows and interactive backdrops for concerts, theatre plays and art performances. His video art is shown in galleries all over the world. Dr. Thomas Burkhalter is an ethnomusicologist, music journalist, and cultural producer from Switzerland. The founder and director of Norient, he published the book Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut (Routledge) and co-edited The Arab Avant-Garde: Music, Politics, Modernity (Wesleyan University Press), Seismographic Sounds – Visions of a New World (Norient) and Out of the Absurdity of Life – Globale Musik (Norient/Traversion). He works as a researcher and project leader at the University of Basel and the University of Arts Bern (HKB), financed by the Swiss National Foundation (SNF). As the director of the Norient Musikfilm Festival, a documentary filmmaker and audio-visual performer, he places emphasis on transdisciplinary approaches between theory and practice.
