The TIMEZONES podcast series plunges into the world of artists and their practices, asking: what does living and working in culture and the arts involve in different countries, cities, and contexts today? The artists’ thoughts on their moods, their social, political, and intellectual realities and their philosophies (of life) have been worked up into experimental audio collages. Season 3 travels from Budapest to Colombo, Buenos Aires, and Ukraine.

The podcasts run the gamut of formats and content, from straight journalism to experimental and documentary approaches, ethnography and fiction, sound art, and improvisation. The TIMZEONES series endeavours to create new artistic forms of storytelling, listening and exchange across the boundaries of geography, time zones, genres, and practices.

Conceived in the wake of Hungary’s latest parliamentary elections in April 2022 which reinforced the Orbán government’s grip on power for an unknown number of years, this episode aims to delve into the city’s independent (i.e. non-government funded) arts and music scene.

Aragalaya: Inside the People’s Struggle in Colombo

This episode explores the creation of art during the political struggle that has shaped Sri Lanka and its capital Colombo since the start of 2022. Sound artist Isuru Kumarasinghe and journalist Devana Senanayake share the perspective of artists and musicians who either lived permanently or temporarily around the Gota Go Gama camp, one of the central sites of the protest.

It’s all about profit and not about culture, as producer Ailín Grad aka Aylu explains.

This episode features four testimonials from Ukrainian artists. They were recorded during the summer of 2022, a few months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The statements are candid monologues about music, dignity, and life during the darkest of times. The four artists speak about their visions of freedom and fear, their feelings about the future, and the influence of this war on their lives and their music; the situations they are facing and the choices they are making. What happened to their art and how do they perceive the role of the artist in this war?

Seit 2021 veröffentlicht Norient gemeinsam mit Klangteppich, dem Berliner Festival für Musik der iranischen Diaspora, ein Online-Special. In der Zwischenzeit hat sich diese Publikation zu einem Archiv lebendiger Perspektiven auf das zeitgenössische Musikschaffen im Iran und in der iranischen Diaspora entwickelt. Die Texte entstanden als Einladung an Künstler*innen des Festivals und andere Autor*innen, eigene Erzählungen und bedeutsame Historiographien vom Austausch zwischen Iran und der Welt zu vertiefen. Damit möchten wir nicht zuletzt dazu anregen, das Bewusstsein für komplexe Realitäten zu schärfen, in denen diasporische Künstler*innen arbeiten. Die fünfte Festival-Ausgabe ist nun Anlass, eine Auswahl der bisherigen und neue Texte in einem gedruckten Magazin zu versammeln.

Since 2021, Norient has been publishing an Online Special together with Klangteppich, the Berlin-based festival for music from the Iranian diaspora. In the meantime, this publication has developed into an archive of lively perspectives on contemporary music-making in Iran and the Iranian diaspora. The texts have been created as an invitation to festival artists and other authors to deepen their own narratives and meaningful historiographies of exchange between Iran and the world. With this Special, we want to raise awareness of the complex realities in which diasporic artists work. The fifth festival edition is now an opportunity to collect a selection of previous and new texts in a printed magazine.

What happens to curatorial practices when treated as multi-voiced, pluralistic, and process-based? Politics of Curatorship: Collective and Affective Interventions asks what curatorship could be when it is freed from its elitist notions. For 20 years, Norient has been successfully publishing texts, films, and sounds that offer new ways to think about and with music and sound from all over the world. This book is a reminder of what Norient stands for: an urge for deep research that doesn’t ignore nor fetishize the senses, and constant questioning, expanding or revising of cultural canons. The volume shows that what has become known as «decolonization» to an often malevolent mainstream discourse might need to be addressed as a matter of curation and curatorship. A more challenging, surprising and less boring way of cultural production is not only a question of what but how one curates. May this book find the readers it deserves and needs.

About the Editors

Monia Acciari is an associate professor in film and television history at De Montfort University, U.K.; she researches and writes about film curatorship, film festivals, and Indian cinema (broadly speaking). She is also currently writing her monograph on the history of film festivals in India. She has been visiting professor at Indian universities and delivered practical courses on film festival organization and film history.

Philipp Rhensius is a Berlin-based writer, musician, sociologist, poet, musicologist, curator, and editor of Norient. His projects are driven by the idea that feeling the chains is the first step toward emancipation. Currently, he is doing artistic research on alienation, and works on new formats such as the audio essay and the monthly Norient column «Sonic Worlding» for which he invites contributors to think with rather than only about music and sound.
