Für das Festival Klang Moor Schopfe 2019 haben der Zürcher Podcast-Produzent Holger Ort und die Berner Soundkünstlerin Lejla Bajrami unter der Redaktion von Theresa Beyer elf Podcasts produzieren, die die Installationen in den verschiedenen Schöpfen porträtieren, kommentieren und remixen. Die Besucher*innen konnten sie vor Ort auf der Audiocouch im Schützenhaus hören – und sind seitdem online hörbar.

Biography

Theresa Beyer gehört seit 2011 als Editorin, Kuratorin und Mitherausgeberin des Buches «Seismographic Sounds – Visions of a New World» zum Kernteam von Norient und beschäftigt sich mit Themen wie Queeren Musikkulturen, experimenteller Musik in Städten wie Belgrad oder Neu Delhi, und reflektiert in Vorträgen über die Chancen des multilokalen Kuratierens. Neben ihrer Norient-Identität ist sie Musikredaktorin bei Radio SRF 2 Kultur. Follow her on LinkedIn.

Biography

Lejla Bajrami was born in Switzerland in 1998. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sound Arts and a master’s degree in Contemporary Arts Practice from the University of Arts in Bern. During her studies, she explored sound installations, spatial and binaural sound compositions, live electronics, sound composition for theater and film, podcast and audio play production, among other areas. Lejla has worked as a technical and sound assistant at the University of Arts in Bern and completed internships in various fields of art, including music festivals, podcast production, and radio.

Unheimliche Heimat

With four main notes only, the legendary video game Prince of Persia (Jordan Mechner, 1989) tries to build a soundscape that illustrates a mysterious and timeless «Orient». This simple midi melody is a very distinct example of Orientalism in music and it is an echo of childhood for Tunisian designer and composer Rehab Hazgui. For the soundtrack of the virtual exhibition «DisOrient: Welcome to the Hall of Mirrors», which is part of the German festival Mannheimer Sommer, she took the Orientalist motive and turned it on its head to create a spooky deconstruction of a stereotyped musical universe.

This is how the artist introduces her piece: «‹Unheimliche Heimat› is a synthscape that emerges from the psyche of Prince of Persia’s protagonist in the video game from 1989. The synthscape transforms a fragment of the original theme into a floating loop. As repetitions pile up, the ‹signification› breaks down and what was familiar becomes strange and uncommon through a process of de-familiarization. One is driven by percolating sounds that signal in and out and lead to a place where self-modulating bleeps course in as if they would be part of the scenery, only to be washed away again by a compulsive loop.»

A virtual music video exhibition by Norient for Mannheimer Sommer (July 12–22, 2020). Because of the Corona pandemic, the festival took place as a virtual event.

Biography

Rehab Hazgui (b. Tunisian) is a transdisciplinary designer, composer, and improviser of electronic music. Using analog synthesizers and handmade audio devices she explores the endless movement of sound, repetition, and the use of silence as a third space on the boundary to navigate between different forms of listening. Through immersive live improvisation, Rehab interacts with her synthesizers, guiding their development and growth into pieces that unfold in the present moment.  Much of her work is informed by her deep adoration for sound and her grounded relationship with the analog synthesizer, a tool she has applied herself to use not only as a composer and player, but also as a designer and builder. Nigerian singer Temi DollFace finds herself on a «one-woman mission to put the theatrics back into live music». In the podcast she talks about fashion, being a female artist in Nigeria, the influence of her grand mother, and the gap between critical acclaim and mainstream chart success. Finally she comments on her music video «Pata Pata», a parody on materialist desires of the «perfect house wife» as shown in 1950s television ads. «If I were to meet somebody for the first time, I would introduce myself as Temi DollFace: vintage dreamer, singer, songwriter, composer, tunesmith, show woman, clothes horse, creative multi-tasker and superhero on a one-woman mission to put the theatrics back into live music.

When I’m on stage I wear self-designed costumes. I like to wear clothes that do a performance of their own because with fashion I can manipulate or convey my message better to my audience. Also, while I’m creating music in the studio I am already dreaming up what I’m going to wear in the video. The mood of the music already paints a picture.As a female artist working in Nigeria, I face a lot of challenges. As I’m doing music that is considered slightly left-of-center, I’m not getting as much airplay or shows as mainstream artists. However, I actually believe that my music has major pop sensibilities and I think it’s just a matter of time before I’m able to bridge the gap between critical acclaim and mainstream chart success. My work and my creativity should speak for me: I don’t like to look at myself as a female artist. I look at myself as an artist.

My grandmother is a huge influence of mine. She is somebody who is very dear to my heart, like a second mother. The major thing that she’s influenced in my life is my doggedness and my relentless attitude in pursuing my goals and my dreams. I’ve watched her fight for women’s rights while also being a great housewife who bakes and sews clothes. She made my mother’s clothes, she made my clothes, and she made my dolly’s clothes. Even now she’s still helping stitch and repair bits and pieces that I wear on stage. So thanks to my grandmother I love vintage, old movies and clothes with a story behind them. She wore the most elegant dresses with cinched-in waists – and every dress had a hat and gloves. And here I am, mimicking what my grandma used to wear and going to flea markets, looking for that bit of treasure from the fifties, my favorite era. I feel like I am slightly displaced in time.»

Tosyn Bucknor is a Nigerian actress, TV/Radio presenter, singer, songwriter and a writer: She works with Top radio 90.9 where she conducts the morning show «Top of the Morning» especially a segment of it called «Areaaa show». Concerning her education background, she graduated from University of Lagos where she studied Law and did her National Youth Service in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Following her wonderful talent she has won many awards such as Nigerian broadcaster's Awards, The Future Awards, Exquisite Lady of the Year awards and several other awards.
