Bern, just after 5pm, pitch-dark evening, dimly lit street lamps visible through the window. The damp and cold December rain freezes into thick snowflakes, covering the ground in slush. It's wintertime in Switzerland.

Chiapas, 10am. The sounds of chickens and bright daylight enter the door of a colorfully painted common room, where festival curator Claudia Popovici, fresh from her residency in Mexico, joins in. It’s summertime in Mexico.

[Janina Neustupny]: Stomach tightness, cold sweat, and trembling hands, your choice of a theme of fear for the artists as well as the audience is going to radically push you and them out of their comfort zones. Why did you decide on this?

[Claudia Popovici]: In Switzerland, we live in a golden cage where security thinking and capitalism determine our lives – and our fears. Instead of delving into them, we push them aside and present ourselves outwardly as seemingly strong and successful. As a collective, we aim to become aware of these deeply ingrained toxic social norms. Confronting and understanding our fears is the key to overcoming them.

[JN]: What role played the artists’ residency experience in Mexico?

[CP]: This experience was pivotal. In Mexico, during the project development, we learned a lot from people’s open attitudes towards personal fears, especially in dealing with death, celebrated through Dia de los Muertos. We gained new perspectives in a new environment and shared our fears within the group. This process was emotionally intense, with liberating moments and painful confrontations with unconscious fears. Body of Fear is a deeply personal project that will continue to evolve over three more residency months. A first public showing will be presented at the Norient Festival 2024.

[JN]: Body of Fear is a theater sound performance: what role do music and sounds play in the piece?

[CP]: We also explore what fear sounds like. Which frequencies, tones, and noises trigger physical fear reactions? Through the ear, we create acoustic encounters with frightening scenarios. By approaching them, we better categorize and understand them.

[JN]: What personal insights have you gained from delving into the theme of fear?

[CP]: My migrant background triggered insecurities: fears of not belonging or meeting societal expectations. Working on this piece made me realize that I can create a home for myself anywhere in the world. Now, we feel maybe the stage fright before the first performance, which we now embrace as anticipation.
