Im ersten Kapitel von Soft Bodies, Hard Words: Poetry in Times of Crisis teilen drei Künstler*innen ihre Praxis. Sie fragen sich: Mit welchen poetischen Mitteln kann man sich künstlerisch, klanglich und allgemein kreativ ausdrücken? Von Erasure-Poesie, die bestehende Texte neu deutet bis zur Suche nach filmischen Sprachen, vom (Neu-)Schreiben bis zum lauten (Neu-)Lesen. Hier werfen wir einen Blick auf die vielfältigen Formen, aus denen Poesie entsteht. Uzma Falak (Kashmir), nithin shams (Kerala/Berlin) und Yashaswini Raghunandan (Bangalore) experimentieren und performen dabei live.

Die Lesung ist eine Sammlung von Zeugnissen und Auslöschungen, Abwesenheiten und Brüchen, Liedern und Klängen. Sie versucht, das Poetische als Ort des Entstehens, der Subversion, der Heimlichkeit und der Verweigerung neu zu denken.

In dieser Lecture-Performance führt uns Yashaswini durch die Fragen und Dilemmata, die ihr aktuelles Filmprojekt umgeben, in dem sie das Leben und Werk eines tamilischen Dichters nachzeichnet. Wie erscheinen die Medienobjekte, Spuren und Geister des Dichters und in welcher Form?

17.45 - 18.45 Nithin Shams: Surfing on the edges of I

Nithin Shams präsentiert seine Sammlung von Originalgedichten, die er in den letzten acht Jahren geschrieben hat und die sich mit den Themen Weite, Zuhören und Nicht-Dualität auseinandersetzen. Seine performative Lesung wird von einer Live-Improvisation mit Samplern, Pedalen und Gesang begleitet.

In Chapter 01 of Soft Bodies, Hard Words: Poetry in Times of Crisis, three artists share their practices that grapple with forms of expressing, sounding, and creating via poetry. From erasure poems to telling the life of a poet, from translation and remediation to research and finding cinematic languages, from (re)writing to (re)reading out loud, we will look at the diverse visual and sonic forms that poetry gets recomposed in. Featuring experimental and performative sessions by Uzma Falak (Kashmir), nithin shams (Kerala/ Berlin), and Yashaswini Raghunandan (Bangalore).

The reading is imagined as a gathering of testimonies and erasures, absences and ruptures, songs and sounds. It seeks to reimagine the poetic as a site of emergence, subversion, stealth and refusal.

16.30 - 17.30 Yashaswini: An incident that never occurred

Through this lecture-performance, Yashaswini takes us through the questions and dilemmas that frame her current film project tracing the life and work of a Tamil poet. How do the media objects, traces and ghosts of the poet appear and in what form?

17.45 - 18.45 Nithin Shams: Surfing on the edges of I

Nithin Shams will present his collections of original poetry written over the last eight years, reflecting on ideas of vastness, listening, and non-duality. His performative reading will unfold alongside live improvisation using samplers, pedals, and voice.

Biography

nithin shams plays with sound. They are based in Berlin and are re-learning everything they thought they knew about sound, sometimes embarrassingly. They have been nurtured and have nurtured homes in Sharjah, Cochin, Chennai, Sonipat, New Delhi, Bastora, Attapadi and now Neukölln. Their main areas of interest are community building, arts education, residency design, walking, thinking and sharing their love for sounds.Their ears are open and welcome to anyone who wants to say hello. . Biography

Yashaswini Raghunandan lives in Bangalore and works with both film and sound to build docu fiction narratives as a way to think about the present. In 2019, she made her first feature film, That Cloud Never Left, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was selected for the Best Experimental Film award at Sharjah Film Platform; the Gold FILAF at the Festival of Art and Film, Perpignan, France; and received a Special Mention at the Kasseler DokFest.

Biography

Uzma Falak, pursuing a PhD in anthropology at the University of Heidelberg, researches how Kashmiri women use sound to imagine different realities. Her artistic and academic work, poetry, essays, and reportage have appeared in several publications, such as English Language Notes, Anthropology and Humanism, and Guernica, as well as several edited collections. She has presented her written, visual, and sound work, including her film, Till Then the Roads Carry Her, at several galleries, festivals, universities, and theaters, such as the Tate Modern Exchange, West Space, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (Naarm/ Melbourne), among others.

Black House und Dance Music stehen im Mittelpunkt unserer ersten Norient-Festivalnacht in der Cafete der Reitschule Bern. Das Zürcher Kollektiv BLKSHFT und Nairobis Grenzen hinterfragende DJ Coco Em führen uns durch Sounds und Genres wie Chicago House oder Detroit Techno, die tief in schwarzen Musikkulturen und Geschichten verwurzelt sind. Um die Kraft dieser Musik zu begreifen, muss man ihre Wurzeln spüren – und das wird in dieser Nacht möglich. Eröffnet wird der Abend mit einem kurzen Talk, bevor die Rhythmen und Beats übernehmen. Wo Politik auf Tanz trifft, entsteht Energie, die weit über den Club hinaus wirkt.

Black House and dance music take center stage at our first Norient Festival night in the Cafete, Reitschule Bern. Zurich-based collective BLKSHFT and Nairobi’s boundary-questioning DJ Coco Em lead us through sounds and genres like Chicago House or Detroit Techno that are deeply rooted in Black musical traditions and histories. To understand the power of this music, one must connect with its roots – and that’s what this night is all about. The evening opens with a short talk before rhythms and beats take over. Was bedeutet es, künstlerisch in den feinen Übergängen zwischen Stille und Lärm, Vibration und Frequenz zu arbeiten – und dabei die eigene Stimme immer wieder neu zu entdecken? Die Filme im Kino REX widmen sich der klassischen und zeitgenössischen Musik Indiens. Der Abend beginnt mit einem Solo-Konzert von Rounak Maiti aus Mumbai, gefolgt von filmischen Porträts des visionären Sängers Kumar Gandharva und der Bass-Sitar-Meisterin Annapurna Devi.

What does it mean to create at the edge of silence and noise, vibration and frequency, to find one’s own voice, again and again? The films at the REX cinema are dedicated to classical and contemporary Indian music. The evening begins with a solo concert by Rounak Maiti from Mumbai, followed by film portraits of the visionary singer Kumar Gandharva and the bass sitar master Annapurna Devi.

Rooted in solitude, Rounak Maiti’s music is written, recorded, and produced entirely by him – quiet invitations to listeners who find refuge in his rough-hewn and vulnerable soundscapes. A multi-faceted composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Rounak's work spans across albums, film scores, audiovisual research, and celebrated collaborations, including with Indian collective EXCISE DEPT and LA-based Small Forward. His latest solo album, Brute Fact/Home Truth, released in July 2025, is a deeply personal document and a seismic evolution through electronic and rock music. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Rhythm of a Flower traces the life and art of Hindustani classical vocalist Kumar Gandharva, a visionary known for his radically innovative approach to raga and performance. After losing a lung to illness early in life, he reinvented his singing so breath itself became musical material. He drew deeply from folk traditions, spiritual poetry, and everyday sound, reshaping Indian classical music with a voice like no one before or after him. A contemplative and experimental biography. In this film, music, breath, and silence become ways of remembering a life attuned to wonder.

6-A Akash Ganga is an intimate portrait of the legendary surbahar virtuoso Annapurna Devi, who spent most of her life withdrawn from the public stage yet remained one of Hindustani classical music’s most influential figures. Set largely within her modest Mumbai apartment at 6-A Akash Ganga, the film pieces together her story through students, archival fragments, and the quiet spaces she inhabited. It explores her rigorous teaching, her complex personal history, and the aura of mystery surrounding a musician who chose silence and seclusion over performance, yet shaped generations through her depth of listening and uncompromising devotion to music.
