Im ersten Kapitel von Soft Bodies, Hard Words: Poetry in Times of Crisis teilen drei Künstler*innen ihre Praxis. Sie fragen sich: Mit welchen poetischen Mitteln kann man sich künstlerisch, klanglich und allgemein kreativ ausdrücken? Von Erasure-Poesie, die bestehende Texte neu deutet bis zur Suche nach filmischen Sprachen, vom (Neu-)Schreiben bis zum lauten (Neu-)Lesen. Hier werfen wir einen Blick auf die vielfältigen Formen, aus denen Poesie entsteht. Uzma Falak (Kashmir), nithin shams (Kerala/Berlin) und Yashaswini Raghunandan (Bangalore) experimentieren und performen dabei live.
 


14.00 - 15.30 Uzma Falak

Die Lesung ist als eine Sammlung von Zeugnissen und Auslöschungen, Abwesenheiten und Brüchen, Liedern und Klängen sowie Echos unzerstörbarer Spuren und Gespenster gedacht. Diese Zusammenstellung von Fragmenten – geprägt von Unvollständigkeit und Fortdauer – beschäftigt sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Geschichte, Verlust und Zeit, die durch Akte des Klingens und Hörens beeinflusst wird. Sie rückt unterbrochene Wege der Erinnerung und Sprache in den Vordergrund und versucht, das Poetische als Ort des Entstehens, der Subversion, der Heimlichkeit und der Verweigerung neu zu denken.


16.30 - 17.30 Yashaswini: An incident that never occurred

In dieser Lecture-Performance führt uns Yashaswini durch die Fragen und Dilemmata, die ihr aktuelles Filmprojekt umgeben, in dem sie das Leben und Werk eines tamilischen Dichters nachzeichnet. Was wird letztendlich aus einem solchen Film – handelt er von einer Person, ihrem Zuhause und ihrer biografischen Vergangenheit oder nimmt er eine Zukunft, eine Präsenz, eine Konstruktion, eine Nachbarschaft vorweg? Wie klingt die Stimme des Dichters? Wie lässt sich seine Präsenz in den alltäglichen Szenen, Fragmenten, Begegnungen und Gesprächen, aus denen der Film besteht, verorten? Was wird zum Leben erweckt? Wie erscheinen die Medienobjekte, Spuren und Geister des Dichters und in welcher Form?


17.45 - 18.45 Nithin Shams: Surfing on the edges of I

Nithin Shams präsentiert seine Sammlung von Originalgedichten, die er in den letzten acht Jahren geschrieben hat und die sich mit den Themen Weite, Zuhören und Nicht-Dualität auseinandersetzen. Seine performative Lesung wird von einer Live-Improvisation mit Samplern, Pedalen und Gesang begleitet. Diese Performance bietet einen ersten Einblick in die Entwürfe, die die Entwicklung seines Debütalbums prägen.

In Chapter 01 of Soft Bodies, Hard Words: Poetry in Times of Crisis, three artists share their practices that grapple with forms of expressing, sounding, and creating via poetry. From erasure poems to telling the life of a poet, from translation and remediation to research and finding cinematic languages, from (re)writing to (re)reading out loud, we will look at the diverse visual and sonic forms that poetry gets recomposed in. Featuring experimental and performative sessions by Uzma Falak (Kashmir), nithin shams (Kerala/ Berlin), and Yashaswini Raghunandan (Bangalore).


14.00 - 15.30 Uzma Falak

The reading is imagined as a gathering of testimonies and erasures, absences and ruptures, songs and sounds, and echoes of indestructible traces and spectres. This assemblage of fragments — marked by incompleteness and ongoingness — dwells in the relationship between history, loss and time inflected by acts of sounding and listening. It foregrounds disrupted itineraries of memory and language, and seeks to reimagine the poetic as a site of emergence, subversion, stealth and refusal.


16.30 - 17.30 Yashaswini: An incident that never occurred

Through this lecture-performance, Yashu takes us through the questions and dilemmas that frame her current film project tracing the life and work of a Tamil poet. When making a film as such, what does it eventually become- is it about a person, their home and biographical past or does it anticipate a future, a presence, a construction, a neighbourhood? What does the voice of the poet sound like? How to locate his presence in the everyday scenes, fragments, encounters and conversations that are making the film? What is being written to life? How do the media objects, traces and ghosts of the poet appear and in what form?


17.45 - 18.45 Nithin Shams: Surfing on the edges of I

Nithin Shams will present his collections of original poetry written over the last eight years, reflecting on ideas of vastness, listening, and non-duality. His performative reading will unfold alongside live improvisation using samplers, pedals, and voice. This performance offers a first glimpse of the sketches that are shaping towards the development of his debut album.

Biography

nithin shams plays with sound. They are based in Berlin and are re-learning everything they thought they knew about sound, sometimes embarrassingly. They have been nurtured and have nurtured homes in Sharjah, Cochin, Chennai, Sonipat, New Delhi, Bastora, Attapadi and now Neukölln. Their main areas of interest are community building, arts education, residency design, walking, thinking and sharing their love for sounds.Their ears are open and welcome to anyone who wants to say hello. . Biography

Yashaswini Raghunandan lives in Bangalore and works with both film and sound to build docu fiction narratives as a way to think about the present. In 2019, she made her first feature film, That Cloud Never Left, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was selected for the Best Experimental Film award at Sharjah Film Platform; the Gold FILAF at the Festival of Art and Film, Perpignan, France; and received a Special Mention at the Kasseler DokFest.

Biography

Uzma Falak, pursuing a PhD in anthropology at the University of Heidelberg, researches how Kashmiri women use sound to imagine different realities. Her artistic and academic work, poetry, essays, and reportage have appeared in several publications, such as English Language Notes, Anthropology and Humanism, and Guernica, as well as several edited collections. She has presented her written, visual, and sound work, including her film, Till Then the Roads Carry Her, at several galleries, festivals, universities, and theaters, such as the Tate Modern Exchange, West Space, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (Naarm/ Melbourne), among others.
