Mercedes Borguńska & Giulia Hess ~ Glowth

Podcast
by Abhishek Mathur

We enter a world hidden from our eyes and experience sights, sounds and sensations invisible to our everyday perception. Mercedes Borguńska and Giulia Hess bring to life bioluminescent fungi, lichens, algae and microorganisms, translating the micro-system of the moor into a macro-universe.

Artist Bio

The artist and violinist Mercedes Borguńska (born 1987) and the sound artist Giulia Hess (born 1984) explore invisible phenomena in their collaborative work. They are interested in the collective process, understanding thoughts, ideas, and work steps as a kind of open source. For their multisensory installation Glowth, the raised bog, as a site of hidden processes, was the focus of their research. Fascinated by complex biological systems, they concentrated on bioluminescent fungi, lichens, algae, and microorganisms. Their installation translates the micro-system of the bog into a macro-universe, a walk-through ecosystem that enables new visual, auditory, and symbolic associations.

This podcast series presents conversations and sounds from the 2025 edition of the Klang Moor Schopfe Festival. Each episode features one particular work and is an attempt to capture the underlying philosophies and processes of the artists in their own words, set to recordings of the installations and occasional sonic interventions by the author.

The next edition of the Klang Moor Schopfe festival will take place from Sept 2 - 12, 2027.
