A DJ and producer focused on highlighting and empowering women within historically male-dominated spaces, her label, Club Felinas, aims to reshape perspectives and amplify voices from a unique standpoint as women in a patriarchal, colonized world.

Taking into account a brief journey through Latin music and its influence inside and outside Latin America, it is crucial for me, in creating a label like Club Felinas, to highlight and support the women through these rhythms. Since they have been, for the most part, male-dominated spaces, it is time for us to create from our perspective, from our experience of being women in a patriarchal and colonizing context. We generate change through action, especially by earning this space through our creations. From here, we are making a change. That’s why it’s exciting and essential that spaces and labels like Club Felinas continue to support women and queer individuals who are creating in this entire Latin American context.

This mix summarizes the evolution of the party scene in the Colombian capital. I have been a DJ for the last six years of my life. During these years, the underground scene in Bogotá, without a doubt, has set the standard for what we know as Latin underground music worldwide. The first track of the set is from neo perreo. Although reminiscent of its DIY roots before the genre’s commercialization, its production style is mixed with lyrics that challenge the traditional machismo of reggaeton by prioritizing self-pleasure. In this first track, Smoker Bambi arrives with his song «Soy tu pesadilla» (2024). Smoker Bambi is one of the genre’s pioneers in Colombia, especially in Cali.

Within the electronic music scene, reggaeton has played a fundamental role, as it was the electronic genre that several generations grew up with, and this, of course, influences what is currently being produced in the capital. Due to this influence, my selection of tracks ranges from 90 bpm to 155 bpm.

In the 90 bpm segment, there are great legends of reggaeton from the early 1990s and 2000s, such as Lito y Polaco and Trebol Clan. However, I would like to highlight the work of women erased from the history of reggaetón, such as K-Mil with her hit «Pa que sudes» (2000) and Irenis with «Amor sin la ropa» (2000). Although they are not contemporaries, they share futuristic synthesizer styles with dembow, like neo perreo as a genre.

Moving on to the 1990s, it is essential to consider the relevance of Latin house and its influence on the mixes we hear today; that is, the Latin club culture already existed, and the music was produced by migrants in first-world countries, with tracks like «Brinca» by Ralphi Rosario (1995) and a remix of «Cachamba» by Kinito Mendez (1995), a must-have at Latino family salon parties.

Contemporarily, as a sample of this mix of rave music with dembow influences, you will find tracks like «Trigger» by PVSSY, from Ecuador, a producer, DJ, and owner of the label Cumbia tu Mente; Imaabs alongside Lechuga Zafiro with their collab «Sofoca» (2019), both DJs and producers from Chile and Uruguay, respectively, who fuse Latin, African, and Arab rhythms and sounds with electronic music production.

In the last part of the set, we find a dembow track, but at 155 bpm (speed dembow) with tracks like «Kima una vez de amor» by Amor Satyr (202) and «Sweat« by DJ Wifi (2024). With all this, we can see how Latin rhythms are genuinely present in other cities, such as Seattle and Paris.

En su exploración del alcance de la música latina dentro y fuera de la región, Sol Tornasol se embarca en su propio viaje a través de este mixtape. Como DJ y productora centrada en resaltar y empoderar a las mujeres dentro de espacios históricamente dominados por hombres, su sello, Club Felinas busca remodelar perspectivas y amplificar voces desde un punto de vista único como mujeres en un mundo patriarcal y colonizado.

Teniendo en mente un breve recorrido por la música latina y su influencia dentro y fuera de Latinoamérica destaca la importancia de crear espacios como Club Felinas, que apoyen a las mujeres y personas queer que están creando en este contexto. Es esencial que se sigan dando espacios y sellos que promuevan la diversidad y la inclusión en la escena musical latinoamericana.

Este mix representa para mí un resumen de la evolución de la escena de fiesta en la capital. Durante los últimos seis años, mi vida ha estado dedicada a ser DJ, y en este lapso, la escena underground en Bogotá ha dejado una marca significativa en lo que conocemos como underground latino a nivel mundial. El primer track del set es de neo perreo. Su estilo de producción, aunque evoca las raíces DIY anteriores a la comercialización del género, está impregnado de letras que desafían el machismo tradicional del reguetón al poner en primer plano el propio placer. En este primer track, destaca Smoker Bambi con su tema «Soy tu pesadilla», una de las pioneras del género en Colombia, especialmente en Cali.

El reguetón ha desempeñado un papel fundamental dentro de la escena electrónica, siendo el género electrónico con el que crecieron varias generaciones. Esta influencia se refleja en la selección de tracks, que abarcan desde los 90 hasta los 155 bpm.

En la sección de los 90 bpm, se destacan grandes leyendas del reguetón de los años 90 y principios de los 2000, como Lito y Polaco, y Trebol Clan. Sin embargo, es importante rescatar el trabajo de mujeres que han sido borradas de la historia del reguetón, como K mil con su éxito «Pa que sudes» e Irenis con «Amor sin la ropa», quienes comparten estilos de sintetizadores futuristas con dembow como el neo perreo.

Continuando con los años 1990, es relevante mencionar la importancia del house latino y su influencia en las mezclas actuales. Tracks como «Brinca» de Ralphi Rosario (1995) y un remix de «Cachamba» por Kinito Mendez son ejemplos de esta influencia.

En la parte contemporánea del set, encontramos una fusión de música rave con tintes de dembow en tracks como «Trigger» por PVSSY, productor, DJ y cabeza del sello Cumbia tu Mente y la colaboración «Sofoca» de Imaabs junto a Lechuga Zafiro, ambos DJs y productores de Chile y Uruguay. Estas producciones fusionan ritmos y sonoridades latinas, africanas y árabes con la música electrónica.

En la última parte del set, nos encontramos con el speed dembow a 155 bpm con tracks como «Kima una vez» de Amor Satyr y «Sweat» de DJ Wifi. Esto muestra cómo los ritmos latinos están presentes en otras culturas, como Seattle y París.

Biography

Sol Tornasol started her journey as a DJ in 2018 at house parties. With the onset of the pandemic and social unrest in Colombia in 2020, she found herself participating in various demonstrations and resistance efforts. Beyond just parties, she took to the streets, performing at balls, mobile stages, and livestreams. It was during these moments that she began delving into Latin club rhythms such as guaracha, dembow, and neo perreo, blending them with hard dance styles like hard house, trance, and vogue beat. Her artistic proposal aims to politicize the dance floor, creating inclusive spaces for all body types and sexualities. She seeks to shed light on music genres produced predominantly by women and individuals with dissident identities in Latin America. Follow her on Instagram.

How many cities can be embedded in just one? How much do we have in common? These and other questions are explored through this flutter of butterflies.

Welcome to Bogotá

Bogotá is known as «the fridge». Here, as in a cold or concrete womb, an important part of the country’s music and culture has been gestated. Like all the capitals of the South, Bogotá is from the margins, made of scraps, but we have forgotten that we are a city of immigrants.

The germ of electronic music in Colombia can probably be traced back to hip hop or other popular genres that since the previous century have made use of synthesizers, drum machines, or computers. Others will say that those in charge of importing the potential of these machines were DJs and producers who in the 1990s and 2000s brought the necessary technology from other latitudes to update local sounds. The truth is that the place of enunciation of electronic music is still crossed by conflicts and tensions that today show the biases and contrasts that shape us as a capital city and country.

Twenty years ago, it would have been unthinkable to listen to guaracha1 in certain parts of a Bogotá neighborhood, like Chapinero or in the north of the city, for the same reason that they would not have let an Indigenous person or a trans woman enter certain parties. The prejudices of a racist and classist society also affected the listening and criteria of radio stations, circuits, and spaces that forgot that genres such as house, deep house, or techno were always conceived by Black populations, dissidents, and marginalized communities. In this context, the notion of security, which in Colombia has been the basis of paramilitary movements that make sure to define what is useful and what is not useful to society, played a role in certain circuits where a scene was being established. This meant there was a focus on importing only certain genres from Europe or the United States, removing them from history. Thus, a notion of good taste was growing based on a very limited understanding of electronic music, which wanted to shield itself from any kind of influence from popular, ordinary music, and genres such as reggaeton, guaracha, or vallenato.2

At a time when certain borders are finally breaking down, allowing more audiences to understand music as the broad phenomenon that it is – and the constant dialogue with local influences from the South and North that it embodies and needs – it is essential to remember that the vanguard of electronic music in Colombia is many years old and was built mainly in marginal, clandestine, self-managed spaces, which in the absence of support from capital and platforms, joined efforts based on precariousness, openness, and vision. Bogotrax, House of Tupamaras, or Putivuelta are some examples of collectives that understood and promoted the party as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, sounds, smells, and bodies, where safety is based above all on contact with difference, without prejudice and without fear. These spaces are opposed to the notion of private security, persecutory and biased, which has been popularized in electronic music communities via the expression «techno-tombo», which refers disparagingly to the police of «real» or «good» music. These safe spaces allow human and musical exploration to find the freedom it needs. In the exchange between identities and genres, a queer, mestizo, and anthropophagous3 practice was configured, engendering a good part of the electronic music that today is being listened to and venerated in the centers and capitals around the world. It is being replicated by the new generations, sometimes lightly, and without the weight of a history that we must continue to remember so as not to fall into a gentrifying oblivion.

With this small synthesis of a history traversed by other questions and actors, we intend to enunciate some of the problems that affect Bogotá and many cities on the continent, problems that have determined its sound. On the other hand, although the music manifests clashes and tensions that translate the social reality of a contrasting and hostile city, electronic music in Bogotá has been eroding the limits of the binarism of center and margin, victim and victimizer, oppressor and oppressed, reminding us that one of the greatest potentials of the party is in that suspension and dissolution of borders and identities – as long as they are recognized beforehand – and in that carnival-like coexistence of bodies and origins that is at the center of our sound.

A Kaleidoscopic City

The following is a set made by several hands that responds to these and other concerns. We invited some bogotanxs (people from Bogotá) from different places to contribute to this sound that is common to all of us. In the following compilation, electronic music is not only what sounds at night in Bogotá’s clubs, it allows us to look at what is heard and generated from a room, a window, or a cell phone; it uses the noise and pollution that we perceive from any end of Bogotá. Sometimes, an interaction is enough to understand the behavior of an entire city.

Bogotá is called «the fridge», but it’s hot. Here, cannibals eat each other and everything else that inhabits the city, even if some don’t want to or are afraid to. We desecrate to update the sacred, dance to appease the hostility or embody it from other places, not just from fear or violence but from celebration and communion. The power of the future is understood before it is heard. We are born devouring.

Estas y otras preguntas se exploran a través de este revoloteo de mariposas.

Bienvenidxs a Bogotá

A Bogotá le dicen la nevera. Aquí se ha gestado, como en un vientre frío o de cemento, una parte importante de la música y de la cultura del país. Como todas las capitales del Sur, Bogotá está hecha de retazos y desde los márgenes. Además, somos una ciudad de inmigrantes.

El germen de la música electrónica probablemente pueda rastrearse en el hip-hop o en otros géneros populares que desde el siglo pasado se han servido de sintetizadores, drum-machines o computadores, pero su lugar de enunciación sigue atravesado por conflictos y tensiones que al día de hoy evidencian los sesgos y contrastes que nos configuran como capital y como país.

Mientras algunas plataformas, clubes y circuitos se han esforzado por construir una escena enfocada en importar únicamente ciertos géneros de Europa o de Estados Unidos, sacándolos de contexto y quitándoles historia, en los últimos años la pregunta por los orígenes se ha hecho urgente. Hace veinte años hubiera sido impensable escuchar guaracha en ciertos lugares de un barrio bogotano como Chapinero o del norte de la ciudad por la misma razón por la que no hubieran dejado entrar a un indígena o a una mujer trans a ciertas fiestas. La noción de seguridad, tan problemática en Colombia, permeó también la escucha y se cercioró de que un buen gusto, fundamentado en una comprensión muy limitada de la electrónica, estuviera blindado y no entrara en contacto con influencias de la música popular, «ordinaria», como el reguetón o la guaracha. El canon que se inventaba en algunos espacios promovía géneros como el house, el deep house o el techno, excluyendo otras exploraciones electrónicas que datan de tiempos atrás y contaminándolas, en algunos casos, de ese clasismo y racismo colombiano que suele inventar amenazas desde el prejuicio.

En una época en la que por fin se están quebrando ciertas fronteras, permitiendo que más audiencias entiendan la música como el fenómeno amplio que es – y el diálogo constante con influencias locales, del sur y también del norte que encarna y necesita –, es fundamental recordar que la vanguardia de la electrónica en Colombia tiene muchos años y se ha construido sobre todo en espacios marginales, clandestinos, autogestionados, que a falta de apoyo de capitales y plataformas, han sumado esfuerzos desde la precariedad, la apertura y la visión. Bogotrax, House of Tupamaras o la Putivuelta son algunos ejemplos de colectivos que han entendido y promovido la fiesta como una plataforma para el intercambio de conocimientos, sonidos, olores y cuerpos, donde la seguridad se funda ante todo en el contacto con la diferencia, sin prejuicio y sin miedo. Estos espacios seguros -opuestos a esa noción de seguridad privada, perseguidora y sesgada, que ha popularizado la expresión «tecno-tombo» para referirse despectivamente a los policías de la «verdadera» o «buena» música- permitieron que la exploración humana y musical encontrará esa libertad que necesita: en el intercambio entre identidades y géneros se fue configurando una práctica queer, mestiza y antropófaga que ha engendrado buena parte de la música electrónica que hoy está siendo escuchada y venerada en los centros y las capitales alrededor del mundo y que está siendo replicada por las nuevas generaciones, a veces con ligereza y sin el peso de una historia que debemos seguir recordando para no caer en ese olvido gentrificador.

Con esta pequeña síntesis de una historia a la que atraviesan otras preguntas y otros actores, pretendemos enunciar algunas de las problemáticas que afectan a Bogotá y a muchas ciudades del continente y que han determinado su sonido. Por otro lado, aunque en la música se manifiesten choques y tensiones que traducen la realidad social de una ciudad contrastada y hostil, la electrónica en Bogotá ha venido erosionando los límites del binarismo centro y margen, víctima y victimario, opresor y oprimido, recordándonos que uno de los potenciales más grandes de la fiesta está en esa suspensión y disolución de fronteras e identidades – siempre y cuando se reconozcan de antemano – y en esa convivencia carnavalera de cuerpos y orígenes que permite escuchar cómo es que realmente sonamos.

Sí, Bogotá está hecha de retazos, pero si todas las ciudades del sur están atravesadas por la miseria y la riqueza, por el contraste y esas fronteras muy visibles e invisibles, ¿cuál es nuestra particularidad? ¿Han visto un mapa de la ciudad? Pregúntenle a un taxista si la conoce a ver que responde. Probablemente delimiten un área de trabajo de no máximo tres localidades. Alguno dirá que sí. ¿Cuántos barrios tiene Bogotá? ¿Cuántas ciudades hay en Bogotá? ¿Cuántos orígenes? ¿Cómo conviven? Convendría hacer las mismas preguntas en los espacios y en las rumbas que frecuentamos.

Una ciudad caleidoscópica

El siguiente es un set hecho a varias manos que responde a estas y a otras inquietudes. Invitamos a algunxs bogotanxs a que contribuyeran desde distintos lugares a ese sonido que es común a todxs.

En el siguiente compilado la electrónica no es únicamente lo que suena en la noche y en sus antros, sino que permite asomarnos a lo que se escucha y genera desde una habitación, desde una ventana o un celular, y que se sirve del ruido y de la contaminación que percibimos desde cualquier extremo de la ciudad en el que estemos. A veces basta una interacción para entender el comportamiento de toda una ciudad.

A Bogotá le dicen la nevera pero hace calor. Acá la gente se come y come de todo, aunque algunos no quieran o tengan miedo. Se profana para actualizar lo sagrado, se baila para aplacar tanta hostilidad o para encarnarla desde otros lugares. Se entiende la potencia del futuro antes de que sea escuchada. Nacemos devorándonos.
