In the first episode of the podcast series «You Are Here!» trumpeter Paul Hübner meets two keyboard players, Liz Kosack and Christoph Ogiermann, for a shared musical indulgence.

The podcast series «You Are Here!» is a musical position statement. Where are we right now? An intentionally ambiguous question. Where are we socially? Artistically? With our minds? How do we (re)connect musically? In the first episode we learn about control and surprise, how music can keep society from becoming even more divided, and why experimental music is an antifascist practice (spoiler: Because it confronts us with the foreign).

Paul Hübner has studied trumpet with Malte Burba and Mike Svoboda in Mainz and Basel. As an interpreter, performer, composer, and improvisor he is notably devoted to new and experimental music. Paul gives concerts in Germany and abroad, as a soloist and in different ensemble formations, amongst them the Ensemble Modern, BR Symphony Orchestra, ensemble phoenix as well as his own formations 3® and mam.manufaktur für aktuelle musik. Christoph Ogiermann, based in Bremen, Germany, works as a spoken word performer, singer, violinist, and keyboardist in the fields of improvisation and European arts-music. Ogiermann is an artistic director for projektgruppe neue musik bremen and REM (Rapid Ear Movement: concerts and festival of electronic music) and a member of the collective artists’ association TONTO in Graz, Austria, and of Stock 11. He is cofounder and member of MusicActionEnsemble KLANK.

Liz Kosack is a musician and designer from Maine, USA, active in Berlin and New York. Her work is cross-platform but focuses on synthesizer playing and masks. She has received fancy papers from William Paterson and Jazz Institut Berlin, plus an emphatic head-pat from New York Foundation for the Arts. She is the first openly lizard-person recipient of the prestigious SWR Jazzpreis (2019.) She is in one million bands, with some heavy cats and dogs. Visit her website.

Biography

Hannes Seidl was born in Bremen and lives in Frankfurt/Main. He is a composer, active in the field of sound installations, music theatre, short films, and concert music. His focus lies on mixed media works such as his radio concerts «You Are Here» (2020) or «Good Morning Deutschland» (2016), or the scenic concert «Salims Salon» (2017). Since 2008 he has been working on different projects with video artist Daniel Kötter, including the recent trilogy Stadt Land Fluss (2017–2019). Follow him on Instagram, and on his Website.

Reasoning with Inner City Rhythms

The first episode of the podcast series «Modes of Listening & Sound Practices» explores the modes of listening that sound researcher Carla J. Maier and rapper Manmeet Kaur adopted on their sound walks through Berlin. Together with the city’s architectures they unfold a unique sonic narrative.

This episode is a co-produced interaction of Manmeet Kaur (rapper, beatmaker) and Carla J. Maier (researcher in sound cultures and auditory research practices). In their words, reasoning with inner-city rhythms is a manifestation of listening experiences that they shared while doing a number of sound walks in the city of Berlin between March and November, 2020. Throughout these documented adventures, they engaged with the city through listening and recording, and had conversations based on that. They explored how interacting with the city’s materialities and sonic adaptability amplifies it’s sonic fictional thinking.

This podcast progresses through three different localities, each emphasizing a particular sonic engagement with the urban environment. The first locality is a response to the «concavity of sounds contained in objects» by performing upon public sculptures to later compose out of. The second locality takes the listener to their listening in transit and panning impulsive realities of motion. The third locality is a refractive and emotional engagement with a monument of historical injustice.

The sonic material consists of recordings that were taken during sound walks, using field recorders and a contact microphone, as well as additional recordings and samples. The intro features some of the sounds the listener will encounter during the audio piece and includes a short verbal intro for the episode. The three parts take the listener on a journey through the city, in which the listener experiences the different localities through a close listening to each locality’s specific sonic materialities and unfolding sonic fictions, which never simply reveals an actual place, but rather is constructed by Maier and Kaur’s perceptual respondings and sonic imaginations. This also includes poetic and musical expressions which were inspired by their listening interventions and further conversations that were continued during the editing process of the audio piece, such as the rap part which concludes the episode.

Biography

Carla J. Maier is researcher of multimodal anthropology at the Centre for Urban Studies at the Institute for European Ethnology. Prior to this she was Visiting Professor of cultural studies at the Department of English and American Studies (Potsdam University). Her focus is on sound and listening, particularly in relation to questions of decolonization in academic and artistic theory and practice. Follow her on Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Manmeet Kaur (India’s pioneer femcee) creates and performs poetry on rhythms, voicing her hope-full social perception as a stoic explorer of sounds to materialize harmony, challenging the often ignored, self-destructive social aspirations hailing in today’s hyper-competitive digital world of materialistic humanmind.

David Helbich, raised in Bremen, Germany, based in Brussels, Belgium, is a conceptual artist who creates experimental works on stage, in writing, online, and in public spaces. He works as a composer, street photographer, and sound/performance artist. Helbich is interested in the understanding of an audience as active individuals, and the search for an opening up of experiences in artistically restricted spaces. Therefore, the notions of guidance and self-performativity are central to his practice. Visit his website.

Naoko Kikuchi was born in Sendai, Japan. Her first steps in playing the string instrument koto were lessons from her grandmother and mother. In 2007, Naoko received a year-long fellowship to work in Frankfurt, Germany, where she currently is a member of IEMA (International Ensemble Modern Akademie). From this experience, she has been expanding her skills in contemporary and ensemble music. She is a member of AsianArt Ensemble (Berlin) and Eric Schaefer's Jazz quartet «Kyoto mon Amour».
