publishing with norient

We welcome unconventional and interesting proposals in subject areas between art, journalism, and academia with a focus on music, sound, and noise. We have a democratic review process, giving each proposal the consideration it deserves before we offer a decision.

Your proposal will be reviewed for its originality of thought and topical relevance by the in-house editorial team and may also be sent outside to respected academic and non-academic specialists. We are also open to edited volumes.

Once your proposal has been accepted, a contract will be signed and a timeline agreed for the manuscript submission. All academic books are subject to peer review (double or single blind) once submitted, and authors will be given an opportunity to revise their work based on these reviews.

The authors/editors have to take care of covering the production costs (book processing charge BPC), but we are happy to advise them on applying for funding. For the time being, our publications are published mainly in digital form. We encourage authors/editors to publish open access publications with us, see guidelines below.

open access

Open Access publications are a new way of publishing in today’s academic world. We believe that it offers important access to contents from far beyond communities of research. Norient Books thus supports and enables open access publications. Please find more information below and/or get in touch with us in case of further questions.

models

Norient Books supports both gold and green open access models. With gold open access, the publication is made freely accessible right from the moment of publication, which means it can be used and shared immediately. With green open access, the publication will only be freely accessible following a period of embargo (usually 12 or 24 months). In this case, the book will be distributed as a paid version before.

costs and funding

The publication of scientific research is associated with costs and investments. Individual production costs of a book depend on the requirements of the respective publication (special features in the layout, illustrations, requirements for translation and copy editing services, etc.). In addition, there are publishing overheads for, among other things, advising the authors and editors, editorial support, international distribution, marketing, the provision and maintenance of the hosting platform, warehousing, delivery, open access services (see above) etc.

The additional costs for an open access publication and the loss of sales revenue need to be compensated by an open access fee (also known as a book processing charge, or BPC for short). This fee is often covered by a third party. The following financing models are currently common:

  • the institution where the author works will bear the costs
  • crowdfunding
  • third-party funds (e.g. from a research grant)
  • author contribution (author pays model)
