Popsternchen und Musiklegenden covern Bob Dylan. Für einen guten Zweck: Der Gewinn geht an Amnesty International. Leider sind die Stimmen aus dem globalen Süden auf diesem Album kaum zu hören. Ein Radiobericht.

Seit fünfzig Jahren kämpft Amnesty International für Menschenrechte. Ebenso lange erfreut der amerikanische Sänger Bob Dylan die Welt mit engagierten Songs. Im Lied «Chimes of Freedom» – zu deutsch «die Glockenklänge der Freiheit» – besingt Bob Dylan Menschen, die ungerecht behandelt werden.

«Chimes of Freedom», so heisst denn auch ein neues Musikalbum, das Amnesty International und Bob Dylan gemeinsam herausgebracht haben. Darauf interpretieren 73 Stars aus der Rock-, Folk- und Popwelt Lieder von Bob Dylan. Alles für einen guten Zweck – allerdings fast ohne Stimmen aus den Ländern des Südens.

Biography

Michael Spahr (VJ Rhaps) is a historian MA, journalist, and media artist. He was on the board of Norient from 2008 until 2014. He developed the website norient.com. He was the co-founder and co-director (2009–2014) of the Norient Musikfilm Festival. He contributed with his video art to the audio-visual scientific media performances of Norient. He was the host and DJ of Norients monthly radio show Sonic Traces on Radio RaBe. He works as a freelance artist, film maker, and journalist in Bern (Switzerland). Follow him on his Website.

Seit rund zehn Jahren veröffentlicht das Augsburger Drone-Ambient-Produzenten Label «Attenuation Circuit» CDs in kleinen limitierten Auflagen. Bei «Attenuation Circuit» stehen Künstler*innen aus den Grenzbereichen zwischen experimentellen Musikgenres wie Drone, Noise, Musique concrète, Industrial und elektroakustischer Improvisation im Zentrum. Aus der Norient-Serie von Brainhall.

In der Sendung werden Ausschnitte der «Attenuation Circuit»-CDs vorgestellt: EMERGE, das Soloprojekt des Labelgründers Sascha Stadelmaier, B°TONG, DAS AUDIO-VISUELLE KOLLEKTIV, das Noise Projekt ORIFICE, das Duo ZANDER/FIEBIG und SGHOR. Die Labelbetreiber Sascha Stadelmaier und Gerald Fiebig haben sich in Augsburg für brainhall über «Attenuation Circuit» unterhalten und stellen uns in dieser Sendung Produktionen und Projekte des Labels vor.

Biography

Andreas Glauser wurde 1973 geboren und lebt in Zürich. Er studierte an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Luzern und schloss mit dem Diplom in Bildender Kunst ab. 2004/05 belegte er einen ein-jährigen Nachdiplomkurs in Kulturmanagement. Er ist als Künstler, Musiker und Organisator tätig und ist mit Ausstellungen und Soundperformances im In- und Ausland präsent. In seinem Audiostudio experimentiert er mit Computer und selbst umgebauten Geräten, wie Orgeln, Mischpulte und Bandmaschinen. Zusammen mit Julia Kälin leitet er das Art Production Label brainhall.

Biography

Julia Kälin wurde 1977 geboren und lebt in Zürich. Sie studierte an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Luzern und an der Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Sie ist als Künstlerin, Kunstvermittlerin und Kulturorganisatorin tätig und zeigt ihre Werke in Ausstellungen und Videofestivals im In- und Ausland. Ihre Arbeiten wurden schon mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Zusammen mit Andreas Glauser leitet sie das Art Production Label brainhall. Zurzeit studiert sie an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste im Studiengang Master of Arts in Art Education.

Simon Grab

The singer and musician Joy Frempong is currently working under the pseudonym Oy. She associates lively Avant-pop, odd electronica, abstract hip-hop, futuristic soul, Dadaistic world music and Debussy-esque classical music. She works with piano, synthesizer, accordion, xylophone, samplers and loop-machines. Accompanied by her singing.

In the Norient podcast she talks about how she works. What kind of samples does she use, and how exactly? What noises and sounds does she like especially and which ones does she discard?

Joy Frempong was born 1978 in Ghana. Her father is from Ghana, her mother from Switzerland. She grew up in Dietlikon, near Zurich, passed her A-levels in 1998 and signed up for Bern Jazz-School two years later. Even though this education helped her to develop today’s vocal flexibility, she states in an interview with music critic Nick Joyce, it was never her aim to be the perfect jazz-singer, able to warble all jazz-standards. Fairly long, Joy Frempong was a member of the Zurich experimental formation Lauschangriff and has worked with the improvisation trio Hans Koch, Martin Schütz und Fredy Studer. Together with Fredy Studer she also works with the band Hans Koch, Martin Schütz und Fredy Studer.

She often travels back to Ghana, Joy tells us in the podcast. She is very interested in the local music scene (check out the norient article on Hiplife: Zwischen Hiplife und Afrofunk), though she has not been able to make many contacts so far. With Bern duo Filewile, Joy Frempong toured 2009 through South Africa.

Her first solo album under the pseudonym OY or Oy Rempong is called First Box Then Walk (Creaked/Namskeio).

Biography

Dr. Thomas Burkhalter is an anthropologist/ethnomusicologist, AV-artist, and writer from Bern (Switzerland). He is the founder and director of Norient and the Norient Festival (NF), co-directed AV-performances and documentary films (e.g. «Contradict», Berner Filmpreis 2020 + Al-Jazeera Witness), and is the author and co-editor of several books (e.g., «Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut», Routledge, «The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East», Wesleyan University Press). He teaches regularly at universities, and runs workshops for arts institutions. Since 2022 he produces the Norient Mixtape for Swiss National Radio SRF3. Currently, he is working on his new music project «Melodies In My Head», and on the podcast series «South Asian Sound Stories» with musicians from the UK, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Biography

Simon Grab, the co-founder of ganzerplatz soundstudios has been an active musician and producer in a wide range of musical contexts. As a composer and sound artist he produces music & sounddesign for feature films, documentaries, theatre and radio. In live performances and installations he uses the venue as an acoustic playground.
