Thomas Burkhalter, PhD, is an anthropologist, multidisciplinary artist, and writer from Bern, Switzerland. He is the founder (2002) and director of Norient (winner Special Prize for Music 2025 – Swiss Music Prizes) and the Norient Festival. Currently, Burkhalter's focus lies on his new music/AV duo, Melodies In My Head, and the podcast Long Take: Life as an Artist. He is a co-editor of the 2025 released book Home is Where the Heart Strives (Norient Books). Burkhalter has co-directed documentary films, including Contradict (Berner Filmpreis 2020, Al-Jazeera Witness), and created AV/theatre performances. He is the author and co-editor of several books, such as Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut (Routledge) and The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East (Wesleyan University Press).

The Gospel of Beat-Man

Reverend Beat-Man is a mad trash rock’n’roll artist and owner of the label Voodoo Rhythm Records. Norient visited him on their quest for sonic traces in Switzerland.

Norient met the Swiss trash blues legend in the Voodoo Rhythm Records headquarter in a warehouse in an industrial area of the Swiss capital city of Bern.

Beat-Man told Norient the story how it all began:

Touring with The Monsters, but also working as a stage hand and a one-man-sideshow for better known bands he started to build up a network around the world:

Beat-Man lost his voice and got serious back problems. So he couldn’t jump around on stage as he used to. So Lightning Beat-Man became Reverend Beat-Man:

Even though in Switzerland he is not a pop star he is probably one of the best known Swiss musicians abroad. He regularily tours in the U.S., in Japan, in Russia and all over Europe. At the moment he plans a tour to New Zealand. His music is global, a global kind of trash blues rock’n’roll, but Beat-Man somehow sees himself as a typical Swiss guy:

Swiss are being seen as perfectionist. Whether or not this is just a cliché Beat-Man believes that this is a true Swiss thing about him and his way of being a record label owner:

The Voodoo Rhythm label exists since 1992. Since then Beat Zeller a.k.a. Beat-Man has released dozens of records from bands or musicians such as King Khan and His Shrines, Zeno Tornado and the Boney Google Brothers, Bob Log III, Delaney Davidson, Dead Brothers, The Watzloves, Pussywarmers, Roy and the Devil’s Motorcycle, Mama Rosin just to name a few.

Reverend Beat-Man also has a lot of followers from other arts than just music. Such as lovely burlesque dancers, crazy silk print artists or passionate filmmakers who keep contributing video clips for the growing Beat-Man worshipping community:

Beat-Man can barely survive by running his record label. But he can rely on a fanbase in every corner of the world. There are fans who even tattoo the logo of the Voodoo Rhythm label in their skin. Sometimes he is surprised how far his fans go to show their admiration:

Beat-Man hopes one day to play in Africa where he says the roots for his music come from. Yeah… that’s rock’n’roll…!!!

Michael Spahr (VJ Rhaps) is a historian MA, journalist, and media artist. He was on the board of Norient from 2008 until 2014. He developed the website norient.com. He was the co-founder and co-director (2009–2014) of the Norient Musikfilm Festival. He contributed with his video art to the audio-visual scientific media performances of Norient. He was the host and DJ of Norients monthly radio show Sonic Traces on Radio RaBe. He works as a freelance artist, film maker, and journalist in Bern (Switzerland). Follow him on his Website.

Murray Schafer gilt als der Begründer der Soundscape-Forschung. Wie beeinflusst unsere akustische Umgebung uns als Menschen? Dieser Frage geht Murray Schafer seit den 1950er als Komponist, Hörforscher, Musikpädagoge und Anti-Lärm-Aktivist nach. Er ist ein Mann mit einer akustischen Vision, vielen Verehrern und einigen Kritikern. Thomas Burkhalter hat Murray Schafer an einer Soundscape Konferenz im Finnischen Koli zum Gespräch getroffen. Ein Portrait.

Auf die Komposition «The Vancouver Soundscape» wird Murray Schafer fast immer angesprochen. «The Vancouver Soundscape» entstand 1973 in Vancouver, der drittgrössten Stadt Kanadas. Murray Schafer war damals Leiter des World Soundscape Project, einer Gruppe von Klangforschern vom Institut für Kommunikation an der lokalen Simon Frazer Universität. Wie verändert sich unsere akustische Umgebung – das interessierte Schafer. Und: Wie nimmt unser Ohr Informationen auf. Schafer und seine Forschungsassistenten Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp, Peter Huse, Bruce Davis und Howard Broomfield zogen also mit Aufnahmegeräten und Spezialmikrophonen los, und sie fingen die verschiedenen Lärm- und Geräuschquellen von Vancouver ein. Sie fragten auch die Leute: Wie hört ihr Eure Stadt? Welche Geräusche gefallen Euch – und welche nicht? Es entstand eine Sammlung von Geräuschen aus Vancouver. Und eine Sammlung von Anekdoten darüber, wie es früher geklungen hat in Vancouver. Da war alles dabei: Schiffshörner, das Quietschen der Züge, bis zu Erzählungen von Indianern in den Reservaten.

«The Vancouver Soundscape» war eigentlich als eine reine Dokumentation gedacht, als ein Katalog von Umweltgeräuschen. Klaus Schöning vom Kölner HörSpielStudio hatte aber eine andere Idee: Für den WDR stellt er die Aufnahmen zu einer musikalischen Komposition zusammen. Das war die zündende Idee, sagt Murray Schafer heute. Das Genre Soundscape-Komposition war geboren. Komponisten und Musiker weltweit nahmen jetzt ihre akustische Umgebung auf und verarbeiteten sie zu Kollagen. Für Schafer selber eine ziemliche Überraschung.

Murray Schafer arbeitete bald für das kanadische Radio CBC. «The Soundscapes of Canada» hiess eine seiner Produktionen. 1975 reiste er dann nach Europa. Dort nahm er die Geräusche und Klänge in fünf Dörfern auf: «Five European Villages», hiess das Projekt. Tag und Nacht nahm die Gruppe auf – nicht bloss die Kirchenmusik, sondern auch den Verkehr vor der Kirche. Musikethnologen untersuchten damals vorwiegend Volksmusik, Schafer aber analysierte Dörfer anhand ihrer Geräusche. In jedem Dorf fand er andere Klänge und Geräusche; überall aber ähnelte sich der akustische Rhythmus von Tag und Nacht. Schafer notierte alles fein säuberlich: Zu welcher Zeit stehen die Leute auf? Wann hört man die Kinder, wann die Frauen, wann die Männer?

Die Musique Concrète setzt meistens auf Akusmatik: Das akustische Grundmaterial wird komplett in einen neuen Kontext übersetzt; die Originalsubstanz eines Klangs ist nicht mehr erkennbar. Die Soundscape-Komposition ist für Murray Schafer mehr: – Er und seine Kollegen von der Frazer Universität haben sogar einen Prinzipienkatalog aufgestellt: 1) Das akustische Originalmaterial bleibt für den Hörer erkennbar; 2) Der Hörer lernt über das Hören einer Soundscape-Komposition eine real existierende Landschaft besser kennen 3) Das akustische Originalmaterial in der originalen Landschaft beeinflusst die Ästhetik und Form der Soundscape-Komposition auf allen Ebenen. 4) Die Soundscape-Komposition verändert unser Wissen und unsere Wahrnehmung der Welt. Soundscape-Komposition wird so zu einem Forschungszweig der Akustischen Ökologie. Es geht immer um Orte, Zeitfragen, die Umwelt und um Hörerfahrungen.

Eines ist für Murray Schafer zentral: Der Soundscape-Forscher sollte sich tiefgreifend mit der akustischen Umgebung vertraut machen, die er vertonen will. Manche Komponisten stehlen die Geräusche sozusagen aus ihrer Umgebung, findet er. Seine Studenten zum Beispiel: Sie haben Frösche aufgenommen, ohne zu wissen, was für Frösche das eigentlich sind. Schafer passte das gar nicht. Es geht Schafer nicht nur darum, mit teuren Geräten herumzureisen und alles aufzunehmen, was einem grad so über den Weg läuft.
