Jeroen Groenewegen defended his Ph.D. The Performance of Identity in Chinese Popular Music at Leiden University in July 2011. Research for the Ph.D. and this article was conducted with a scholarship of the Hulsewé-Wazniewski Foundation for the advancement of teaching and research in the archeology, art and material culture of China at Leiden University. Currently, Groenewegen lives in Beijing.
