«TIMEZONES» – Episode 24 What does it mean to live on an island and yet feel estranged from the sea? Moving through Singapore and the Malay archipelago, this episode, produced by Zachary Chan and Rosemainy Buang, gathers voices, songs, and personal stories that are carried across the waters of Southeast Asia.

Claudia Stöckli describes the political, social and spiritual motivations behind her installation, in which changes in humidity trigger changes in the sound composition. She is joined in this conversation by Mouhssine Bousouiss, a percussionist from the Gnawa community, whose music and healing practices are an integral part of the work.

Vanessà Heer brings a revolutionary feminist perspective to the alpsegen, a traditional prayer chanted by herdsmen in the Swiss alps. The reimagined hymn is a tribute to inspirational women, living or dead, a call to be imbued with their spirit and power.

Informed by Ramia Beladel’s research on Sufi healing, this sound piece relies on trance and self-reconfiguration. The soundtrack includes sounds recorded during an annual celebration of the local saint in Moulay Bouchta, Morocco.
