Video

For the Norient Film Festival NFF, multi-disciplinary artists Gystère and Eden Tinto Collins created a feature-length video collage. In The F.r.iction Show they wish, through fiction, to expose a combination of images and a multitude of points of view.

The work is inspired by the denkyem, one of the Adinkra symbols of the Akan people. It is the one that holds the attention and the ethical and spiritual direction of the main thread of this film-collage. This symbol takes part of the «logo» Gystère and Eden created «vous l’aurez voulu». Denkyem means unity in diversity. The F.r.iction Show juxtaposes the creations of both Gystère and Eden Tinto Collins as the result of a global reflection in process around a musical identity borrowed from different Afro-Eurasian cultures. But it is also a proposal of context for this music to emerge, out of the Space.

Biography

Eden Tinto Collins developed her practice of fine arts through the National School of Fine Arts of Paris Cergy and during her internship in Ghana in the structure directed by Bibie Brew at the New Morning. Poetician and hyper-media artist, she explores in a horizontal wave of collaborations the notions of interdependency, f.r.ictions between melancholia, mythology, and post/trans/cyber/humanity. Her language is imaginal as she creates moments of care, staged and set through music, activated by re-enactment. Biography

Gystère made its debut in the 2000s by accumulating projects and captivated by keyboards and multi-track tape, or used to jams and open mics between Paris, Bahia and N.Y.C. As half of the pop duo Mc Luvin, Gystère even does a lap on the mainstream circuit, with major signing and opening acts for Saul Williams, Yuksek, or Stromae. He then returned to his role as a multi-disciplinary artist: songwriter, DJ, music video director or pianist for Cerrone, the Jamel Comedy Club, or the Grand Journal. They were asked to reflect on their personal thoughts of «2021». How do they see and describe the world they live in? How do they see the present and the future? What sounds, clips, media pieces, and thoughts give hope for «2021» and for the future? What makes them angry, hopeful, depressed, suicidal, or happy?

Biography

Poetra Asantewa is a Ghanaian poet and writer. Her work, both on the page and on the stage, engages issues of feminism, inequality, and mental health in her community. Her chapbook «You Too Will Know Me» is part of the New Generation African Poetry Chapbook set, and her debut poetry book will be published by Eccobooks in 2021. Henry Desouza Nelson is a Ghanaian creator based primarily in Accra. He is well-versed in film, photography, graphic design, and sound. 2021: A Tarotscope Reading

In this episode of our 2021 video series, multidisciplinary South African artist Umlilo forwards these questions to the universe and puts a few tarot cards on the table.

2020 is undoubtedly a year we will never forget. The beginning of a new decade and era was overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging societies across the world. Hospitals were overwhelmed, borders were shut, economies shut down and people were left devastated by the rising numbers of deaths and illnesses in every country. Artists suffered a great deal and yet there were still many stories of inspiration and hope despite experiencing the most difficult year of our lifetime.

This commissioned piece titled 2021: A Tarotscope Reading looks to the cosmos for an inspirational message for 2021. The pandemic is still rearing its nasty head with second waves across the world, new strains that have put many countries on lockdown including South Africa. This reading provides some astrological insight into the Age of Aquarius, which began on December 21^st, 2020,when the great conjunction occurred between Saturn and Jupiter, a feat that took 400 years to happen. This signifies a new era of expansion, growth, and coherence.

Umlilo embarked on a tarotscope reading which presented sixcards that help guide us in 2021. These cards symbolize different meanings and aspirations and are as follows: The Star, Temperance, Death, The Magician, The High Priestess, and the 7 of Pentacles. The video is an abstract meditation with music and narration by Umlilo who also acts as a model for each card taken by photographer Snethemba Mnguni and artistic director Ndi Makaulule. Umlilo and the team responded to the readings by recreating an afro-futuristic multi-media photoshoot to capture the world of tarot.

Sinethemba Mnguni is a South African born artist and crafts man, mostly known as SJ Photography for his artistic work. He prides himself with the way in which he tells his stories through contemporary photography art work. Despite his engineering background, art is one of his favourite sports. Ndi Makaulule is a designer and creative director from Johannesburg. She has diverse experience in production, curation, and conceptualisation in both design and art. With almost ten years experience in the corporate design space, she aims to focus on more creative independent projects, collaborating with artists and designers across multiple mediums. Biography

Umlilo is a intergalactic shape-shifting kwaai diva and a genre and gender bending multi-disciplinary artist. The queer performer/music producer’s signature sound dubbed «future kwaai» explores and pushes the boundaries of electronic kwaito, alt-pop music in contemporary South Africa, and has been a regular fixture in the international music community.
