Interview

Patricia Bosshard, a violonist and composer from Lausanne, is a floating musical nomad between Free Improvisation, Composition, Electroacoustic Experiments, Musique Concrète and Noise Electronics. Her diverse projects show a deep sense of musical research, always considering space as a substantial part of composition.

In the video interview (in french) she talks to norient about sound environments, notation of noise, swiss traditional music, privat concerts and her ongoing project MRI.

Coyote

In her recent work «Coyote» , inspired by Joseph Beuys, she explores the possibilities of controlling sounds with the kbow, a violin bow built by Keith McMillen with 5 embedded sensors translating gestures into data (speed, hair pressure, grip pressure, accelerometer, bow length).

Bosshard, who is also part of the Dynamo group, attaches herself to ropes, flying through the air while playing her violin, always in the research of sound in space. Together with Nicolas Wintsch, a videoartist specializing on large scale videomapping and James d’O (electro acoustique, electronics), they explore the boundaries of architecture, image and sound.

MRI – Sound Spatialisation

In collaboration with Simon Grab, Patricia Bosshard performs live electronics in a surround sound environment. They have both been delighted of the harsh sounds of the MRI scanner, when they ended up in the magnetic resonance tube at a hospital due to an accident. Bosshard and Grab, always in the research of the unheard, translate this unusual acoustic situation into music. They use exclusively sound recordings from an MRI scanner (Magnet Resonance Imaging). In the tradition of the Musique Concrète they leave the raw material in its own radicality. The actual transformation is being achieved by layering these rich and complex sounds. Grab and Bosshard compose a varied and dense universe, which stylisticly goes from minimal ambient sounds to harsh noise. In concert the 2 musicians present their sound in a elaborated surround system. The audience is surrounded by various speakers and subwoofers.

INSUB META ORCHESTRA

Founded in September 2010, the IMO is a large ensemble of improvisers gathering together around 45 musicians from all over Switzerland and further afield. Born out of the amorphous Insubordinations label and collective that has been publishing and promoting the varied forms of experimental improvisation since 2006. The orchestra aims to develop collective listening and playing, highlighting microclimatic sonorities, the addition of subtle layers and working towards a single sound which is driven by a shared idea carried by the impressive group of musicians making up the orchestra. With over 20 concerts and two residencies under its belt the IMO has been able to weave a unique and astonishing path. The IMO tends to a way of working where instruments lose their traditional function and sound to become abstract sounding objects establishing a non-hierarchical relation between them. M2 – Metro Station Jingles in Lausanne

Before the new metro in Lausanne was finished in 2008, Patricia Bosshard asked the reponsible people at TL (Public Transport Lausanne) to compose the metro station jingles. Together with sound engineer David Scrufari they recorded local sounds and sound environments and produced the short pieces. The station announcements were spoken by Renato Häusler, who shouts the hours from the cathedral tower in four directions since 2002 (a tradition that goes back to 1405, originally to alarm the people of fire, nowadays announcing the hours between 22h-2h).

Biography

Simon Grab, the co-founder of ganzerplatz soundstudios has been an active musician and producer in a wide range of musical contexts. As a composer and sound artist he produces music & sounddesign for feature films, documentaries, theatre and radio. In live performances and installations he uses the venue as an acoustic playground. Dirty Parrafin is the now of South African hip hop. They are one of the few artists that decided to do their own South African sound and not try too hard to strive to the American commecrcial Hip Hop Sound. Love these guys! They are currently busy with a project with Yasiin Bey. So surely they will cause some bigger waves soon.

One of my favorite Rock bands from SA and favorite videos from the past years. When I saw this video the first time I felt that the industry in SA just took a leap forward with quality in music videos. This band has a ton of great songs and videos.

Some friends Joao Orecchia and Mpumi form the Blk Jks made this amazing visual video for their new collaboration Motel Mari. I love the fact that these guys are doing their own thing. They really represent an aesthetic that is going down in Joburg Central.

One of the big Afrikaans pop bands in SA. Good friends of mine that has made it in so many various musical projects. This video feels like a great little insight into a part of Afrikaans South African culture.

Some of my good friends in the SA music scene. I chose this video since it is very similar to the previous video but for another cultural group in SA. I love the energy in the song and video. The train surfers are just incredible. Any video gimmick just rarely beats the real life over the top experiences that is documented.

Biography

Xander Ferreira is a South African conceptual artist exploiting various mediums ranging from staged performance, installation, photography, video and sound to manifest social statement or inspiration. Hailing from a farm near the border of Mozambique, Xander Ferreira always knew that his future lay in the world of creative expression, something that he has tirelessly pushed to new limits. Growing up in the thick of political unrest and cultural divergence not only opened his mind, but also his sound, to the diversity and the originality that make his musical project Gazelle the enfant terrible of music. Collaborations stretch as far and wide as Peaches to The Bloody Beetroots. Combining the worlds of Visual Arts and Musical Performance. Currently Xander has teamed up with acclaimed singer Findlay Brown to create The Happy Show which is an international event focussing rare African music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and exploring current African music. Marokko: Von Punk bis Death Core

Jugendliche aus der Wirtschaftsmetropole Casablanca und der Hauptstadt Rabat zeigen und erklären, wie sie zwischen Orient und Okzident zerrieben werden und darin sich und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu finden versuchen. Eine Foto- und Video-Reportage über die «Generation Nayda».

Marokko. So nahe von Europa, dem Okzident. Und doch so fern, so viel mehr ist Marokko noch Orient. Ein Land zerrissen zwischen Tradition und Moderne. Ein Land auch, in dem viele Bürger ihr Dasein, ihren Alltag und ihre Ansichten dem Wahlspruch «Gott, Vaterland, König» unterordnen. Marokko. Eine konstitutionelle Monarchie, die sich den ganz grossen Umwälzungen im Zuge des arabischen Frühlings entzog. Seit dem für die Maghreb-Region historischen Jahr 2011 ist es plötzlich nicht mehr das offenste und demokratischste Land in Nordafrika. Generation Nayda ist der Blick in ein Land, das die Jugend in ihrer Identitätsfindung behindert und sie in ihrem Leben, ihrem Alltag und ihrem Heranwachsen einschränkt. Zu sehr wird an traditionellen und religiösen Werten festgehalten, der ernsthafte Wille zu Veränderung und Öffnung fehlt.

Die Bilder zu dieser Arbeit entstanden im Herbst 2010 und im Frühjahr 2011. Die Interviews wurden ebenfalls aufgezeichnet, als die arabische Revolution im März 2011 in Tunesien, Ägypten und Libyen auf ihrem Höhepunkt war. Jugendliche aus der Wirtschaftsmetropole Casablanca und der Hauptstadt Rabat zeigen und erklären, wie sie zwischen Orient und Okzident zerrieben werden und darin sich und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu finden versuchen. Während die Popkultur bei uns längst Mainstream ist, hat sie in Marokko eine weitaus politischere Dimension, da sie von den Jugendlichen als Gegenkultur gelebt wird. Diese Gegenkultur wurde durch den Zugang zum Internet möglich, das erst Ende der 00er-Jahre verbreitet Einzug in die marokkanischen Haushalte Einzug hielt.

Durch soziale Netzwerke wie Facebook und Myspace sind Mode, Gestus und Inhalt von westlichen Popkulturen für die Jugend in Marokko erst greifbar und adaptierbar geworden. Dabei entstanden jedoch nicht bloss Nachahmungen der westlichen Musik- und Lifestyle-Kultur. Vielmehr entwickelten sich durch das Zusammenspiel von westlichen und eigenen traditionellen Lebensweisen neue Jugendbewegungen. Diese werden zu einer Art Projektionsfläche für Selbstbestimmung, niemals aber zur Verleumdung der eigenen Kultur.

Die Gespräche mit jungen Musikern zeigen, dass der eigene religiöse und kulturelle Hintergrund wichtig ist und wichtig bleibt. Wer in Marokko Punk, Death Core oder Heavy Metal spielt, bedient sich Werkzeugen, um eigene Inhalte zu vermitteln und gesellschaftliche Fragen zu reflektieren. Das Nachdenken über gesellschaftliche Zwänge, Moralvorstellungen und Schwierigkeiten im eigenen, unmittelbaren Alltag.

«Nayda» bedeutet aus dem marokkanischen Arabisch übersetzt «aufwärts». Der Begriff spielt auf die spanische Demokratiebewegung «Movida» an, die sich nach dem Tod Francos formierte. Nayda hört man an Konzerten oft als Zwischenruf.

Nach einer Lehre als Buchhändler, diverse Praktika bei Dokumentarfilmen. 2007-2011 Studium Fotografiestudium an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK). Austauschsemester in Budapest an der Moholy Nagy University.Daneben diverse Reisen u.a. Iran, Kosovo, Marokko. Christoph Oeschger lebt und arbeitet als Fotograf und Künstler in Zürich.

Nach einer Lehre zur kaufmännischen Angestellten folgten das Studium in Journalismus und Kommunikation an der Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (ZHAW) und Praktika bei den Zürichsee-Zeitungen und 20 Minuten Print.
