Biography

Thomas Burkhalter, PhD, is an anthropologist, multidisciplinary artist, and writer from Bern, Switzerland. He is the founder and director of Norient and the Norient Festival. Burkhalter has co-directed documentary films, including Contradict (Berner Filmpreis 2020, Al-Jazeera Witness), and created AV/theatre performances. He is the author and co-editor of several books, such as Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut (Routledge) and The Arab Avant Garde: Musical Innovation in the Middle East (Wesleyan University Press). His experimental radio feature, Gqom Edits – A Durban Visit, was nominated for the Prix Europa in 2017. Burkhalter teaches regularly at universities, leads workshops for arts institutions, and, since 2022, has produced the Norient Mixtape for Swiss National Radio SRF3. Currently, Burkhalter's focus lies on his new music/AV duo, Melodies In My Head, and the podcast Long Take: Life as an Artist. Burkhalter’s work combines personal and global perspectives, often in close collaboration with artists and thinkers from across the world. Ruptured Sessions with C-drík Fermont

C-drík Fermont works between musique concrète, electro-acoustic music and noise. Plus he writes about experimental music in Africa and Asia. His latest trip brought him to Beirut, where he was interviewed for Ruptured Sessions.

C-drík (aka Kirdec) is an academically trained musician, DJ, singer, composer and drummer. Of Greek, Zairian and Belgian descent, born in Congo (former Zaire) C-drík grew up in Belgium and also lived in the Netherlands. He is an eternal voyager and performed in numerous countries across North America, Europe, the Middle-East, Africa and Asia. He started his first project in 1989 and juggles in between many projects and electronic genres.

He is also a label manager and gig organizer who produces his own projects and experimental artists who predominantly originate from Asia and Africa on the labels Syrphe and Textolux. One of his articles on experimental music in non-Western countries was recently published in the book Le performantiel noise, edited by Sébastien Biset.

C-drík is a former student of electro-acoustic composer Annette Vande Gorne [Conservatory of Mons]. C-drík is also a sound designer and composer, mostly into various electronic and experimental genres such as electro-acoustic, breakcore, industrial, electro, digital punk and free jazz. With regards to visual arts, C-drík composes soundtracks for theatre, exhibitions, sound installations, fashion shows and short movies. His movie works include musical scores for Sergei Eisenstein's Strike [2006] and The Battleship Potemkin [2009]. He composed the soundtrack for Atalodz, an experimental short film directed by Gisèle Pape, and won the prize for the best soundtrack at the «Coté Court» festival in Montreuil, France in 2008. His latest trip brought him to Beirut, where he was interviewed for Ruptured Sessions.

Biography

Ziad Nawfal is a Lebanese DJ, radio host, music promoter, and producer who has been making himself busy in the Beirut underground for nearly three decades now. He got his start in a legit role, playing music on the city’s government station Radio Liban. Always existing on the periphery of the station, and proudly flouting its rules, Nawfal programmed a show with a DIY ethos, playing lesser-known tunes from indie, psychedelic and experimental circles. He later became a DJ and promoter around the city, continuing to discover the hidden alternative scenes of Lebanon and the wider Middle East. He’s been active ever since, using his radio shows, as well as his record label Ruptured, to join up the eclectic range of sounds going on in the region.
