Thomas Burkhalter
Thomas Burkhalter, an ethnomusicologist, music journalist and cultural producer from Bern (Switzerland), runs the research project «Global Niches – Music in a transnational World» at the Zurich University of the Arts. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of norient – Network for Local and Global Sounds and Media Culture. He produced and tours with the audio-visual performances «Sonic Traces: From the Arab World», «Sonic Traces: From Switzerland», co-curates the norient Musikfilm Festival), and co-directed the documentary film «Buy More Incense» (2002) about Indian and Pakistani musicians of second and third generation in the UK. His dissertation «Creating Sense out of Chaos: New Sounds from Beirut« researched empirically experimental and popular music in Lebanon (University of Bern and Oldenburg, 2009). His book «Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut» is going to be published by Routledge in 2013.

Michael Spahr
Michael Spahr is a web editor of norient.com. He is the co-director of the Norient Musikfilm Festival. He is a media artist specialized in video art and audio-visual performances. He also directs and produces films. Michael Spahr has studied history, philosophy and media science in Bern (Switzerland) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). After his master’s degree at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam he started working for Dutch and Swiss TV companies. Since 2003 he has been running his own media and art companies. At the moment he works part-time as news editor for the community radio station Radio Bern RaBe.

Theresa Beyer
Theresa Beyer hat in Leipzig, Bonn, Florenz und Kairo gelebt, gelernt und gearbeitet. Als Master-Grantee studierte sie «Kulturelle Anthropologie der Musik» am Berner Institut für Musikwissenschaft, wo sie nun zu Neuer Schweizer Volksmusik und Mundart-Rap doktoriert. Als Journalistin schreibt sie u.a. für die Berner Zeitung, die Schweizer Musikzeitung und die Zeitschrift dissonance und leitet die Kultursendung Subkutan auf Radio Bern RaBe. Seit 2012 ist Theresa Beyer audiophile Spürnase und Editorin für Norient sowie Mitherausgeberin des Buches «Out of the Absurdity of Life – Globale Musik» (→ Kurzvita).
